JMPD AWARE OF SPONTANEOUS MARCHES AND GATHERINGS IN SOWETO; LAW ENFORCEMENT MONITORING SITUATION @JoburgMPD statement: The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), alongside other law enforcement agencies, is aware of planned marches and community gatherings scheduled to take place in Soweto on Monday, 29 June 2026. The City of Johannesburg has not received any formal applications for these gatherings in terms of the Regulation of Gatherings Act. Consequently, these demonstrations are considered spontaneous. To ensure public safety, minimise traffic disruptions, and prevent lawlessness, JMPD officers will be actively deployed to monitor these situations closely. Based on circulating public notices, motorists and residents should anticipate disruptions on Monday, 29 June 2026, around the following areas: β’ Soweto March ("March for Our Townships, For Our Future"): Participants are scheduled to meet at the Jabulani Amphitheatre, Soweto, at 09:00 AM. β’ Zondi Community Notice (Meeting with Amabutho): The gathering will commence at 07:00 AM at the Kancwane Big Screen, followed by a procession to the Jabulani Amphitheatre. Expect delays and potential road closures near Zondi and routes leading toward the Jabulani Amphitheatre. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes where possible. JMPD respects the constitutional right to freedom of expression but urges organisers and participants to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and orderly. Any acts of criminality, damage to property, or severe disruption to the flow of traffic will not be tolerated and will be met with law enforcement action. JMPD will provide updates as the situation develops.
